Chasing the Dawn
Published in Hardcover by The International Library of Poetry (27 December, 2000)
Author: John Sullivan
Average review score:

Quality poetry for all seasons!
Chasing the Dawn is an excellent anthology of poems. It contains plenty of interesting stories, images, and memories of people from a variety of backgrounds. Lovers of poetry and literature in general will appreciate a finely crafted hardcover book of poems that can be enjoyed all year long. I definitely recommend this book to readers everywhere. You won't regret it.

A Poem for Everyone
---"keep in mind that each verse is the voice of a poet, of a mind that needs to make sense of this world, of a heart that feels the effects of every moment in his life, and perhaps of a memory that is striving to surface (Mellisa S. Mitchell) And this book, Chasing the Dawn. does have a poem for everyone. The artists are international authors who submitted their work to Poetry.com for publication. The editors have done an exceptional job of compiling poetry for every mood in this anthology. This is a book to keep by the bedside, on the coffee table, or on the dining room table to read in spare moments or longer. This is a collection which will remind you of times past or events to come. Look for any emotion; love, hate, joy, sorrow, happiness, despondence, depression or elation, and too many to list---you will find them between the pages of 1 to 239. The presentation is a no nonsense two columns per page format that is easy to read. The index is excellent although an index by content of poems would have been a nice addition. There is also a List of Biographies that helps to acquaint you with the authors. This must own book of poetry will furnish a lifetime of pleasure.

The Complete Gilbert & Sullivan: Librettos from All Fourteen Operettas
Published in Hardcover by Black Dog & Leventhal Pub (September, 1998)
Authors: Arthur Sullivan, Deems Taylor, and William Schwenck Gilbert
Average review score:

Good, but the Bradley book upstages it.
When I compare this edition of the libretto to the Ian Bradley edition of the collected librettos (Oxford), I find that this has more weak points compared to the Bradley book. Of course, both books suffer from inaccuracies in the libretto, but here is a more serious case. Also, the print of the book is a little bit hard to read, because of its age from many years ago. The Bradley book seems to be easier. Yet even despite these shortcomings I am happy to know that you can still sing along to ANY G&S song in here, or find your favourite passage, be it from MIKADO, PIRATES or PINAFORE, or any other opera. But this book still has two advantages to it - containg the librettist's drawings, and its cheaper price compared to the Bradley book. As well as the libretto for the never-before-heard THESPIS opera. Overall, while I am prepared to recommend this to the true Savoyard, I am not really prepared to recommend this to a beginner, except those who cannot afford to spend more money on the Bradley book. Still, this edition is an easy one with which you can live.

The most witty and civilized entertainment ever devised.
If you are a Savoyard, or even if you know what that means, this jumbo collection is one you will treasure. With a preface by esteemed music critic, Deems Taylor, and illustrations by W. S. Gilbert himself, the complete librettos from all fourteen Gilbert & Sullivan operettas is the perfect companion at a great low price. You'll find yourself humming the Arthur Sullivan melodies as you read "I polished up the handles so carefully," "Let the punishment fit the crime," and "I'm called little Buttercup, Sweet little Buttercup." In one attractive volume are the complete and unabridged texts of "The Mikado," "The Pirates of Penzance, "H.M.S Pinafore," and the eleven other operettas that set a world standard for intelligent musical theatre.

Drosophila Protocols
Published in Hardcover by Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory (15 January, 2000)
Authors: William Sullivan, M. Ashburner, and R. Scott Hawley
Average review score:

Comprehensive in scope, not quite enough detail.
This book is very impressive in scope, and (as other reviewers have said) IS indispensable for any Drosophila laboratory. It is a very valuable addition to every Drosophila laboratory. The book covers virtually every area of Drosophila work. Many of the topics discussed are cutting edge, such as the chapter on RNA interference, targeted cell ablation, and biochemical preparations from Drosophila (such as soluble nuclear extracts and membrane proteins). Overall I am very pleased with the book, and glad I bought it! One section of the book I find particularly useful is the beginners guide to the Drosophila genome project. This section overviews the information available from the recently completed Drosophila genome project. It tell us what kinds of information are available about the fly genome, how this information was collected, and where we can download it from the internet (complete with internet web site addresses)!

My only criticism of the book is a criticism which applies to ALL manuals published by the Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory Press: the protocols are too superficial, and not dealt with in sufficient detail to allow a novice to carry out these techniques (which is what a manual ideally SHOULD do). This has been true of all the CSHLP manuals I have seen. Conspicuously absent from the CSHL publications is a TROUBLESHOOTING section, which can be referred to if the researcher runs into problems. As we all know, there are many small (and seemingly trivial) details to any protocol which, if not carried out properly, can make or break an experiment. Some steps in a protocol are always more fastidious than others, and it is critical for us to know which steps can be done with a bucket and which steps require an eyedropper.

For my money, the best and most comprehensive manual is the CURRENT PROTOCOLS IN MOLECULAR BIOLOGY manual (Wiley and Sons), which is updated regularly, and has extensive troubleshooting sections attached to each protocol. (They have recently come out with a companion manual dealing exclusively with protein techniques.) Also, I highly recommend the METHODS IN MOLECULAR BIOLOGY series (Humana Press) for its concise protocols and supplementary troubleshooting sections. If the researcher is familiar with the techniques the troubleshooting sections need not be consulted, but if the researcher is a novice the troubleshooting sections are invaluable. Unfortunately a Drosophila manual is not available from either of these publishers, but this CSHL manual makes a good substitute. I recommend this book for all Drosophilists!

The complete index of DROSOPHILA PROTOCOLS (CSHLP) is available at the publishers website given below...

A must have for any Drosophila lab
This latest edition by Sullivan et al. is the best protocols manual for Drosophila that I've seen. It should be a staple for any fly lab. It provides the most up-to-date protocols for common techniques (ie staining, dissections, cytology) as well as more recent additions (i.e. DNA microarrays, neuroactive drugs, GFP reporters). Moreover, the protocols are clear, detailed, and easy to follow.

Embassies Under Siege: Personal Accounts by Diplomats on the Front Line
Published in Hardcover by Brasseys, Inc. (October, 1995)
Author: Joseph G. Sullivan
Average review score:

Eye Opener
The premises of this book are that during the late 70" and 80's budget cuts decreased the amount of money the State Department could spend on the embassy program. The cuts they chose to make were to the site security forces and the actual compound security equipment. The book also gives the reader a nice little run down of all the attaches they have faced over the past 25 years.

The most interesting parts of the book were the known safety issues that were brought up by embassy staff, but could not be corrected due to funding problems. Then to correlate these safety issues with the events that have taken place or the past few years, it is chilling to see the mistakes that were made. Overall this is an interesting book.

Why Diplomacy is the First Line of Defense
"Embassies Under Siege" tells the story of some of the greatest tragedies and dramas of modern diplomacy. Told by Americans who experienced shattering events, these first-hand accounts speak of courage, terror, and blunders as ordinary foreign service officers attempt to cope with extraordinary circumstances. The immediacy of the writing, brevity of the chapters, and the harrowing reality of the assassinations, bombings and hostage-takings make this a quick read. Yet you will ponder the lessons of "Embassies Under Siege" long after you've finished the book. A must-read for anyone interested in foreign affairs and the challenges of diplomacy in developing countries.

George Bush

Authors: George Sullivan and Jane Steltenpohl

GREAT BOOK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
After reading the book, George Bush, it left me knowing things I never knew about George Bush. The book gave me a lot of facts I didn't know about him. Even though the book isn't up to date it still gave me a lot of background information about him. This book is a good background book for me. Now I know a lot of information about George Bush. So if I go and read another George Bush book I know a lot of things about him. George Bush still is an outstanding person. If anyone wanted to read a book on George Bush it should be this one by George Sullivan. Many people may not get the same reactions to this book as I did. But it is a really enjoyable book.

A juvenile biography of George Bush that should be updated
George Sullivan's juvenile biography of George Bush ends the morning after his inauguration as the nation's 41st President, so the focus is more on the man than on his presidency. Published in 1989 this book begins by outlining Bush's goals as President and a chapter on "Vital Statistics," which tells us "some things to know" about Bush. I actually liked this different approach, of establishing the character of the man before proceeding into the biographical details, which should help young readers make the connection between what happens in a person's life and the sort of person they become. Although this book does not cover the Bush presidency, it is an excellent biography for older students to use to find out about the path to the White House for the first member of the Bush family to hold that office. Too bad Sullivan never authored an updated version of this biography after Bush was defeated in 1992, because his writing style and attention to detail make this one of the better Bush biographies for young adults, even without covering the White House years. Final Note: The book is illustrated with black & white photographs as well as reproduction of yearbook entries on Bush.

The Good Listener
Published in Paperback by Ave Maria Press (August, 2000)
Author: James E. Sullivan
Average review score:

good little book
Very sincere and clear view on a humanistic approach to listening. Author seems to practicwe what he preaches and this book should be helpful to people looking to be more empathetic with others. Only downside is over generalization of peoples problems which may require more care than flippant analysis.

An excellent little book
Writers and editors may be familiar with an old standby in the editing world, The Elements of Style, a slim little volume that has served as a precious help to anyone seeking to work with the English language. Well, James Sullivan and Ave Maria press have written and published a similar little guide to interpersonal communications called The Good Listener. This small book covers succinctly the measures many of us need to take to really become better, more effective listeners. Reading this book will not make you a better listener, only practice can do that, but it will definitely teach you about the foundations of good listening so you will know what to practice.

Integral Humanism, Freedom in the Modern World, and a Letter on Independence (Maritain, Jacques, Works. V 11.)
Published in Hardcover by Univ of Notre Dame Pr (April, 1996)
Authors: Jacques Maritain, Otto A. Bird, Joseph Evans, and Richard O'Sullivan
Average review score:

What it means to be human
A bit of philosophy that occasionally reached beyond me, but an engaging read on the meaning of being human.

Towards a new christian civilization
The book Integral Humanism can be considered as one of the most important books of the twentieth century. It is Maritains masterwork on social philosophy. It was first published in Spain as a result of six lectures on the university of Santander in 1934. The whole idea of the book, is that the crisis of the Modern times is a problem of the question of what humanism is? He shows that the great problems of communism and liberalism is that it is based on an antropocentric humanism. Against this form of humanism Maritain defends a theocentric humanism, which gives meaning and value to the human person. His idea of the human person has been known as Personalism. The person is more important than the totality of society. As an individual he belongs to society and therefore he has to obey the laws etc. But as a person, society must be serving his neccessary rights to live a full human life, which also means for men to find his supernatural destiny. Only a society which has a notion of a common good can provide meaning for the human life. The society is organic, build up of lower relative autonomous groups. This idea is consistent with the earlier encyclical views of a Pope like Leo XIII and the ideas or roman catholicism on social issues. Maritain has been praised for the book, but also been criticized because of his lack of insight on economic issues. Altought he rejects marxism, he also has an anti-capitalist attitude.

Maritain can be considered as one of the most influential roman catholic philosophers of the twentieth century and I think this work has still a lot of value for the problems of our time.

Iolanthe, or the Peer & the Peri. With Dialogue: Vocal Score
Published in Paperback by Hal Leonard (November, 1996)
Authors: Gilbert and Arthur Sullivan
Average review score:

Iolanthe
Great! A marvelous satire of Victorian politics. Iolanthe, a fairy, has a son, Stephon, who is half mortal and cannot marry his true love because the entire House of Lords is in love with her too! To revenge themselves on the Peers, the fairies put Strephon into Parliament and arrange it so every bill he chooses is passed into law.

One of the great Victorian satires.
Few opera/operetta librettos read very well on their own (of course, they weren't intended to). In the case of Gilbert and Sullivan, the exercise is not only sheer pleasure, but almost a necessity; such is the speed of the monologues and intricacy of the ensembles that much of Gilbert's brilliant verbal wit gets lost.

'Iolanthe' is one of his most enrapturing confections, the story of a shepherd, Strephon, half-fairy half-mortal, whose mother, Iolanthe, is a disgraced sprite (it is forbidden for fairies to marry mortals), and whose father (unbeknownst to either) is the Lord Chancellor who won't let him marry his ward, Phyllis, darling of the Lords.

The material may be fantastic, the setting pastoral, but the satire in this 1882 work is spot-on contemporary, with jibes at the Irish problem, the uselessness of the House of Lords (who as a caste are as close to fantasy as the fairies, so it is no surprise they exchange the House of Peers for the House of Peris), and the ruling class' fear of democracy and universal suffrage. A most delightful fancy has the fairies take over Parliament in the shape of Strephon, whose every whim unites the notoriously factional Liberal and Conservative in his favour.

this is Gilbert at his funniest - the verbal contortions he undergoes in the search for rhymes break all linguistic boundaries, and his view of the fragility of centuries-old English institutions prescient. There is an extraordinary patter song by the Lord Chancellor which shows the man embodying Law and Constitution plunging into nightmare, the culmination of a libretto in which identities and forms, as well as seemingly irrevocable laws and customs, are repeatedly broken down or metamorphosed.

Ireland Awaits Me
Published in Paperback by PublishAmerica (23 September, 2002)
Author: Carolyn Courtney Sullivan
Average review score:

Touching Tribute to the Journey of the Heart
Ms. Sullivan's first novel is a wonderfully warm story of heartbreak and fulfillment. She uses both the people and the country of Ireland (The Land of "Céad Míle Fáilte" - One Hundred Thousand Welcomes) to bring her touching tale to life.

In order to live her life to the fullest, Andrea Cartwright must face her tragic past and move beyond it. Her family ties give her the inner strength to begin the journey that takes her beyond yesterday as she discovers the courage to accept the hope of today and the promise of tomorrow.

Recommendation: A story for anyone who has been abandoned and who is seeking to live again after their loss.

Ireland Awaits Me
Loved the book, and can't wait for the sequal.

Need assistance with book!
Thank you for taking a moment to read my note. I am writing from Milwaukee, Wisconsin in the states. I am of Irish descent and have visited Dublin on my way to Antrim where I still have relatives. I am writing because I am trying to locate (if one exists) a copy (poster) of a work titled "Irish Times" by Peter David Morgan. It was included in a book titled "Ireland IN Poetry" By Charles Sullivan. Have you any idea how I might locate it? I would greatly appreciate any assistance you can offer and thank i you in advance for doing so.

Yours,

Kevin Mulvenna

Full Emmersion
Ireland in Poetry is full of lush paintings, photographs and drawings by Irish artists (both new and old). These include striking photos of Ireland today, oil paintings by Jack Yeats, historic photos now in the National Library and many other works of art.

Almost every page has an illustration and the space that is not occupied by illustrations are full of poetry, and oh what poetry it is! There are wonderful works from famous scribes, such as Yeats, Heaney, Burns, Kipling, and Joyce, as well as magical moments from less well known Chuilleanain, Donnelly, Hewitt.

The book is divided into four parts: 1) The country of Ireland, 2)The history of Ireland, 3) The people of Ireland, and 4) The future of Ireland.

Well worth finding - It will soak your senses!
